Formula
This is the standard amortization formula where M is the monthly payment, P is the principal loan amount, I is the monthly interest rate (annual rate divided by 12), and N is the total number of months. The calculation accounts for the reducing principal balance over time.
Examples
For a short-term personal loan, a $15,000 principal at a higher 11% interest rate requires a monthly payment of $491.08. Over 36 months, the total repayment reaches $17,678.90, meaning you paid $2,678.90 strictly in interest.
For a 30-year home loan, financing $350,000 at 6.5% generates massive long-term interest. While the monthly payment is stable at $2,212.24, the total interest paid ($446,405) actually exceeds the original loan amount.
